The Colorado River accounts for about one-third of Southern California’s water provide, whereas the remaining comes from Northern California and native sources.
Most of what California attracts from the Colorado River goes to crop irrigation. Consuming water is managed by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which brings water from the Colorado River via the Colorado River Aqueduct. The Colorado River Compact, a 1922 settlement that allotted the river’s water, lets California draw as much as 4.4 million acre-feet per 12 months.
